Observation notes: This unusual but beautiful caterpillar was spotted on the outside wall of my house, underneath the flood lights. It was getting dark and there were many species of moths and other flying bugs attracted to the light flying all around. It wasn't on any plant at the time, and I have never seen this species here before. It had the most beautiful honey brown, shiny loops of hair, that would be the envy of many women, even men! It has been unusually wet this season in New Mexico, which has resulted in much wildlife, both bug and other, that I have never seen, but this caterpillar is by far the most interesting to me. It seemed to be strangely attracted to the light, like the moths and other flying bugs were. I have never seen a caterpillar like this one, not even in pictures. I hope this species can be identified. Unfortunately, I was unable to capture it in a jar to take to UNM as it disappeared from sight before I was able to get the jar. As far as plants, we have many weeds and such growing on my property, and I'm no good at identifying any of them at this time, but can send pictures if needed, as I take many photos of my yard. I see beauty in things most people don't. I love nature! There is another species of caterpillar that is a regular resident here, and plentiful, which is another reason this one is so strange to me. I will upload the photos of that species with the host plant, in a separate post of course, to be identified. I'm so curious! Thank you for the opportunity to share my findings, and hopefully I will be enlightened with information!
