Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: October 28, 2012
Submitted by: mmholly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This butterfly sat with wings spread on a tree, then eventually moved to the base of the tree. It was a sunny day. It was in the garden of family members in Todos Santos Cuchumatán, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, at an altitude of 8445 feet. They grow apples, corn, black beans, potatoes, onions, kale, tomatoes, and squash. There is a tree nursery in Todos Santos that grows elm, cypress, fir, and pine, part of intensive efforts to reforest the steep slopes of the Cuchumatanes.
