Huron Sachem
Atalopedes huron
Observation date: September 21, 2018
Submitted by: sharonforsyth
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This skipper was found near a patch of canna lilies where at least three Brazilian Skipper exuviae were seen on this date-- two of which were found the day before. It was seen by three of us, one of whom has extensive experience with skippers, including Brazilian Skippers. We initially thought it was a Brazilian Skipper, but upon further study of the photos and input from others, we concluded that it wasn't. Some have suggested that it is a female Sachem, but all three original observers have noted that it was too big and elongated to be a Sachem. Furthermore, additional people have agreed-- based on Reid's photo-- that size and shape rule out Sachem and are more consistent with Ocola or Brazilian, although FW and HW pattern are not consistent with either of those species. A much better photograph was taken by Reid Rumelt, whom I expect will add his record shortly.

Coordinator notes: I can't really see enough to be sure, but I don't think this is either a Brazilian or Ocola skipper. From this photo, I think you were on the right track earlier when you thought this might be a female Huron Sachem. But I can't be certain. I'm going to place this in the Cannot Identify queue in the hope that one of the skipper experts will be a bit more certain than I am. BTW, not sure how this ended up in my queue, but it just arrived. JRains
This is certainly a female A. huron, based on the large hyaline spots on the forewing, orange coloration, and band of spots on the dorsal hindwing. J. Calhoun
