Regal Fritillary
Speyeria idalia

Observation date: September 06, 2019
Submitted by: COA1955
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Going through last year's pictures and this popped up. I remember the Regal stayed for awhile to nectar and preferred Pentas over native nectar sources; native Violas might be attracting them as well.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: A very good record Char....back in the late 1990's the Regal was recorded in most all of the counties in northeastern Colorado when it seemed to be everywhere throughout the Platte River corridor. The one in your photo is a male and its worn condition attests to their longevity. This is a very strong flying butterfly and can cover great distance. Not very many permanent colonies of this frit in Colorado. A much more common inhabitant of Nebraska and South Dakota. Mike
