Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: April 21, 2021
Submitted by: wilderneyes
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The weather was sunny and warm (~20°C) when it was observed in the latter part of the mid afternoon. The butterfly was resting on the back door screen, with wings pressed together. It was later able to be carefully contained in order to obtain a view of the outer wings. Only two sets of legs are visible, which are white. The body is slightly fuzzy, and the antennae are thin with club-like extensions at the tips. The underside of the wings are black with white along the edges in a "scalloped" pattern, and the outer side of the wings is a deep red with small, pale blue dots lining the similarly yellow edges.
