Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Perched with wings closed and proboscis extended on narrow, damp dirt trail through meadow at nw corner of lake. Did not fly away from me, rather it turned its back on me presenting an almost invisible profile to me. Finally relaxed and turned broadside to the sun and me. Note dark spots on abdomen, not shadows. Habitat: Mountain Lake, marshy wet meadow at north end and east side of lake. Wide, muddy beach along west side to south end of lake. Forest edge. Mixed conifer forest including pine, Aspen. Shrubby willows, huckleberry and Douglas Spirea. Grassy meadow with asters, gentian and lady’s tresses blooming. So many froglets and toadlets I had to watch where I stepped. Lots of Yellow Jackets.
