Apache Skipper
Hesperia woodgatei

Observation date: September 09, 2024

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Mostly sunny, very slight breeze, temp in the upper 70s F. Right on time for this area! Very fresh (slight purple tinge on FW costa) female observed nectaring on purple aster. When male approached, she vibrated her wings but kept feeding. The male was persistent and positioned himself on the left side of the potential mate and directed the tip of his abdomen towards her abdomen. The female kept feeding and vibrating her wings but was not interested in the male. Perhaps, if she was freshly emerged, she needed a boost of energy before being receptive to the male. A total of 4 seen.

Coordinator notes: terrific field notes, Topper. The vibrating wings is classic rejection signal for most butterfly species.
