'Northern' Southern Hairstreak
Satyrium favonius ontario

Observation date: June 01, 2013
Date notes: Mid to late afternoon
Submitted by: gunhilda
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Here is another picture of the darker/muddier hairstreak. The second picture shows it in comparison to the larger hairstreak to give you an idea of the size difference. If Banded Hairstreaks can have orange above the blue spot, I'd say it might be one of them. They do look very different. Edited 6-5-13: Yeah, when I say Banded Hairstreak, I'm looking at picture in the Kaufman Field Guide to Butterflies of North America showing a version without the double bands. Looking back through all my pictures again, though, I think they're probably all the same thing. They appeared at the same time, disappeared at the same time, were eating the same food at the same time, and very much behaved the same way.

Coordinator notes: This subspecies of the Oak (AKA Southern) Hairstreak is the best match I can find for this sighting photo. The blue spot on the underwing is capped with orange, which is not characteristic of Banded Hairstreak, the suggested id. Many of the BAMONA photos of the "Northern" Southern Hairstreak have this blue sheen on the undersides which this sighting photo has. The sighting photo looks very much like a worn version of BAMONA sightings table photo from 04-17-2012. Almost all of the sightings of this species have been in the April to June timeframe, and so the date of this sighting also fits this species.
