Observation notes: Sunny, 80 degrees, no breeze, humid. It had rained recently; the ground was very damp, but not soggy. The butterfly was flitting in low, tight circles, then landed on a leaf about a foot above the ground, and stayed still very briefly. We were on a forested mountainside above the upstream end of the small lake. Nearby were spicebush, oak, beech, maple, white pine, sassafras, redbud, grapevines, poison ivy, greenbrier, mixed weeds.
