Observation notes: Sunny, 82 degrees, light breeze, low humidity. With one other of the same species and about ten Red-spotted Purples, this butterfly was eating from a bit of degraded feces. It flitted to the gravel for a moment, then returned to its food. Nearby were oak, maple, sycamore, cherry, locust, beech, sweet gum, dogwood, buckeye, multiflora rose, goldenrod, wingstem, joe pye weed, boneset, tall thistle, lobelia, red clover, mouse ears, cinnamon vine, honeysuckle, poison ivy, grape vines.
