Observation notes: Time: ~9:45 p.m. Habitat: A small sunflower patch at the edge of a lawn. Notes: This sphinx moth sighting was unusual for a couple of reasons. First of all, it was oddly late; most sphinx moths fly about an hour earlier in my neighborhood, right at dusk. Secondly, it was nectaring at sunflowers (pictured here) instead of the usual flowers with long nectar tubes. In any case, I captured it for my National Moth Week "moth house" the following evening.
