Raspberry Crown Borer Moth
Pennisetia marginata

Observation date: August 14, 2018
Submitted by: Nigel Horsley
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The moth was flying in a manner very much like a wasp in that it had a low buzz and had a searching motion among the undergrowth. Sunny, dry, humid conditions, no wind. It alighted frequently and was observed laying one reddish brown egg on a blackberry leaf. I first thought it might be a wasp or hornet, but its very small head in relation to its body size was very obvious and it would have its wings working two to three seconds before taking off, whereas as a wasp or hornet immediately arises.
