Observation notes: Found moving across path strewn mainly with pine needles but oak and deciduous trees are also in this cottage lot on Big Gull Lake in North Frontenac, Ontario. Caterpillar was about 3 ½ inches long and about ¾ “ thick and moved slowly.

Coordinator notes: Yours is subspecies pini, Eacles imperialis pini. It eats White Pine needles. You found it as it was looking for a sandy spot in which to overwinter; it digs itself three or four inches deep into the ground and hibernates there.
