Pahaska Skipper
Hesperia pahaska

Observation date: August 21, 2020
Submitted by: DeepSkyKelly
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: There were lots of skippers at the top of the volcano. I couldn't tell if they were all the same species--a couple seemed to have slightly different markings. Green seems likely, EXCEPT, I'm not sure if they are hilltoppers--as are Nevada and Pahaska. Too early for Apache. All were fairly aggressive--engaging with others in area--and seemed to be defending territories along the trail. I could hear a sharp flutter as they passed.

Coordinator notes: DeepSky, these are Pahaska. Pahaska is the hilltopper, while Green is a gully-patroller. The ventral hindwing markings are consistent with Pahaska as shown on Glassberg (2017) pages 346-347. Too late in the season for Nevada. Apache would be a new record for that area, but keep looking; it also hilltops. Western Branded Skipper also should be on the wing - a late season flyer. BTW, I can't approve four submittals for the same observation, so I'll approve this one and reject the other three. In future, I think you can upload multiple photos to each submittal. Thanks for submitting!
