Pearl Crescent
Phyciodes tharos

Observation date: May 10, 2021
Submitted by: Bogfinder
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Quite a cold day so this little guy was quite cooperative. It was on Yellow-rocket (Barbarea vulgaris). I know Northern and Pearl may be considered the same species soon but this bug fit Northern more than any variation I've ever seen. Luckily I got pretty good cell phone photos.

Coordinator notes: I realize these two Phyciodes sp. can be a difficult to distinguish from each other, and their ranges certainly overlap in NJ. But based on the underside of the HW, I'm pretty sure this is P. tharos. I trust that other coordinators will correct me if I'm mistaken. JRains
