Greenish Blue
Plebejus saepiolus

Observation date: July 05, 2021
Submitted by: twofried
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Not sure about this one... The butterfly did not expose it's under-side while mudding near the Rio Costilla, after which it flew off and could not be relocated. There are a few barely visible black spots on the underside but not diagnostic. The topside seems a bit unique with the extensive rusty brown on both the forewing and hindwing. The white edge and thin black border also seem to point to Reakirt's although the dorsal hindwing should have black spots on Reakirt's. Given variability, this topside pic may not be enough to produce an ID; may need the bottom side as well.

Coordinator notes: this is a challenging one. some of the dorsal colors are refractions that would look different at a different angle. if you have Glassberg's 2017 (2nd ed.), check out p. 141. the top row shows female greenish Blues ranging from brown through half-blue/half-gray to. several have the lit up orange spots at the back of the hindwing. also, this is their habitat. Greenish Blue.
