Pipevine Swallowtail
Battus philenor

Observation date: July 25, 2021
Submitted by: rabbitrun
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Seen and photographed through sticks and branches on the other side of a tree.. I was watching Monarchs, and this showed up. Its a bit worn, but the bright blue and small white dots are indicative of a Pipevine Swallowtail butterfly, the only one that has been earlier. I do not usually see these later in Aug. It was flapping furiously, going from flower to flower and took off before I could get to a better spot. Nectaring on tall garden phlox.
