Observation notes: A friend of mine removed a Juniper covered in cases from his property and delivered me several branches covered in cases in late March of 2021. I have never been fortunate enough to find active larvae in the field. I was curious to see their life cycle so I decided to rear these. They have been difficult to photograph. Especially in the earlier instars. Now that they are far more active, I have been able to see them move around more. My best guess these are now 3rd instar larvae.
I am curious to see if any males will emerge from the cases since I do not see exit holes in all of them. Original location marked on map.
