Gray Buckeye
Junonia grisea

Observation date: August 19, 2021
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: My only observation of a buckeye at this elevation in Soledad Canyon during 2021. It was taking nutrients from canid scat, likely coyote, which consisted of seeds and pulp from immature fruits of buffalo gourd vines growing nearby. Joining the buckeye, in taking nutrients from this source, were common small butterflies, e.g., Reakirt's and marine blues and white checkered-skippers. The morning was sunny, warm, and with light wind.

Coordinator notes: Jim, this is among the grayest of the Gray Buckeyes that have come to my attention. may I please borrow one of these images for BofNM? after being superabundant in 2020, they were much scarcer in 2021. this species will likely be moved over to Gray Buckeye when all the taxonomic arm-waving is done. yours is about as gray as I've seen. lovely photos. thanks!
