Silver-spotted Skipper
Epargyreus clarus
Observation date: May 20, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: An individual large skipper was taking nutrients from damp sand and saturated soil along a narrow seep near the Pine Tree Trail. The site is above the Aguirre Springs Campground on the east-facing slope of the Organ Mountains. The afternoon was under full sun, warm, and with wind gusting to 40-50 mph; this site was largely protected from wind gusts due to topography and tall shrubs and trees along the drainage. During the session a Chihuahuan spotted whiptail attempted predation on this skipper (can provide a brief video of this predation attempt).
