Horace's Duskywing
Erynnis horatius

Observation date: July 25, 2022
Submitted by: Joshua C
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I have come to this conclusion that this is Meridian or Persius duskywing. I'm going with Meridian due to mostly gray rather than brown-tinged FW and lack of boldness of HW spots. Unfortunately I got no ventral views. This was average size for a duskywing, rather large actually if I remember correctly (I forgot to take note of size in the field sadly).

Coordinator notes: Joshua, your assessment that it was of average or larger size eliminates persius and afranius, which are very petite for duskywings. Further, the real choice is between Horace's and Meridian, both of which occur in the Sandias and fly in summer. Trying to ID certain duskywings from photos is a big challenge. Nevertheless, I think the brownish HW fringe tips me toward Horace's.
