Fiery Skipper
Hylephila phyleus

Observation date: August 04, 2022
Submitted by: jamesvonloh
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: For an ~15-minute timeframe, several skippers emerged from dense Johnson- and Bermuda-grass stands to display and likely to warm following a pre-dawn monsoon rainstorm (soil was still moist). A few also selected barnyard grass flower heads to perch and display. The site includes the Rio Grande bank and the adjoining wastewater outfall channel banks where these grass species dominate the herbaceous cover. The mid-morning was sunny, becoming hot, humid, and with a steady/light wind.
