Observation notes: One of two monarchs observed using a narrow band of whorled milkweed plants along the Rio Grande was photographed ovipositing under young milkweed leaves and emerging flower buds. The second individual immediately flew over the water and downstream and was not digitally recorded. This individual would circle over and through the milkweed stems and leaves, occasionally finding a place to oviposit, then fly to willow/tamarisk shrubs to rest before resuming. The noontime was hot, humid, with bright sky and steady, light wind. A predawn monsoon rainstorm left the ground moist.
