'Astyanax' Red-spotted Purple
Limenitis arthemis astyanax

Observation date: August 05, 2022
Submitted by: treys grammy
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found on the siding on the front of the garage. (There are a couple of wild cherry trees in a wooded area just a few feet from that side of the house.) We put the caterpillar in a shoebox with some wild cherry twigs and leaves, and the next morning we discovered it had already suspended itself from the inside of the lid. We cut that section away and put it in a butterfly “cage” we have. That was August 6. Only a few days later we were surprised to find it had transformed and emerged while we were gone to church on August 14!! We released it onto a small branch of my Rose of Sharon bush, and about an hour later it was gone.
