Juniper Hairstreak
Callophrys gryneus

Observation date: April 14, 2023

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: In Little Rock Creek Canyon. Sunny day in the 60’s F. One of the target species I was looking for based on notes from Ken Denton’s logbook from the 70's and 80's. Very tough to photograph as this species hides well camouflaged on its Juniper host plant and doesn't fly much unless disturbed. Per Ken’s suggestion I hit the branches with a hiking stick and any butterflies would take flight but either flew far off or high into the 15-25 foot tall Junipers. Finally one landed briefly on a lower branch. Lol. Probably subspecies Juniperaria although it appears there are some taxonomy changes going on with this group. Creek was more like a river and generally the vegetation and wildflowers in this canyon benefited from the double of average rainfall of winter 2022/2023.
