Horace's Duskywing
Erynnis horatius

Observation date: July 08, 2023
Submitted by: tjay13
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This one was really beat up. Not very confident here, but I believe the relatively strong gray rings on body point to Pacuvius. Seems to be brown on the FW and pretty faded. Fading might skew the seeming color a bit though. On the plus side, this should coincide with peak flight. On the downside, this doesn't seem to be a recent firescape, didn't notice any Fendler's Buckbrush (and was trying to keep an eye out for that). I seem to struggle with Duskywings/skippers. All other open winged skippers/duskywings seen this morning were much darker (fresher).

Coordinator notes: a worn female; the duskywings challenge everyone! this is peak season for horatius as well; I see no "color" on this one, so it's not pacuvius; female horatius are quite blotchy, contrasty, like this one
