Small Wood-Nymph
Cercyonis oetus

Observation date: July 15, 2023
Submitted by: Joshua C
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Feeding from Rhus glabra. I'm not certain that this is the right ID, but I think it is based on the relatively small FW eyespots, the lower appearing slightly smaller than the upper, and the rather plain VHW. In the second photo, the "twin peaks" on the HW postmedian line mentioned by Glassberg in his account of Small Wood-Nymph are visible. When I first saw this I didn't think it was a Small Wood nymph since it didn't seem noticeably small, relative to Common wood-nymph, but I hadn't seen that one for about a year before this so my sense of the size of that species may have been off. It is worth noting that after I lost track of it, I saw a wood-nymph flying away from the same patch of sumac (could have been the same individual) that I did percieve as being considerably small.
