Observation notes: This hairstreak was photographed in low shrubbery along a shaded foot path of the "Darlingtonia Botanical Trail" (in the Smith River National Recreation Area, CA), near the gravel parking area. When walking the path, we stirred up a cloud of these butterflies (25+) which quickly perched again - low in the shrubs. Temperature was 91 degrees F, & it was hot & sunny in the open areas. A few Wood Nymphs flew nearby, along with one high-flying "California Sister" butterfly.
