California Dogface
Zerene eurydice

Observation date: September 09, 2023
Submitted by: JFong916
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I was watering my front yard azalea, and the dogface butterfly flew out. I have never seen such a bright colorful butterfly before so I continued to follow it as it flew to my orange tree to rest. This is when I took the picture of it sitting on my orange tree. It is a beautiful specimen.

Coordinator notes: Without seeing the upperside I can't tell if this is a California Dogface or the actual Dogface Butterfly. Both occur in LA County but the actual Dogface Butterfly is rare in that county though I took one in Castaic City Park by a 7 foot Northern Pacific Rattlesnake. So most likely you have the California Dogface which is fairly common in the Los Angeles area and is the California state butterfly-Ken Davenport of Bakersfield.
