Coordinator notes: This is difficult as both hyantis and lotta (Desert Marble) occur in the San Diego Mountains with lotta more likely on eastern slopes. I can't see the forewing bar at the end of the forewing cell and the hindwings seem to be more lightly marbled than lotta normally is. If hyantis and lotta turn out to be conspecific then I am right, if lotta is really a different species, then I may be wrong. To get truly correct identications, I prefer actual specimens over photographs with life posing hiding field marks, as in this series of photos. Either way, the mapped distributions of both are correct.-Ken Davenport
