Orange-humped Mapleworm
Symmerista leucitys

Observation date: May 23, 2024
Submitted by: mountainbirder
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Observed walking along the top of my 6 foot high deer fence when it fell off. I then took a few photos. It was warm (mid 70's), partly cloudy with just a trace of wind. The head segment is yellow with what appears to be many eyes (or teeth). The tail segment has a orange band. It appears to have at least 3 yellow stripes the length between the head & tail segments. Also many black stripes on each segment on a white background between head & tail. No nearby plants. Only oak, maple, poplar, hickory, elm and more trees. I live in the Rich Mountain Wilderness Area of the Chattachoochee National Forest, Gilmer County, Georgia
