Persius Duskywing
Erynnis persius

Observation date: June 03, 2024
Submitted by: Cascade Colors
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: In an open, drier sagebrush-dominated habitat. To me, the upper wings seem much more patterned/defined with multiple colors as compared to most photos of the Persius. The Rocky Mountain Duskywing also seemed to lack this definition.
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: A female Persius Duskywing...females normally have more well pattern forewings...as do pacuvius but the submarginal band on the forewings you can see in your photo is definitely gray and very continuous. On western Colorado pacuvius the band is more distinctly separated to individual segments (or squared-shape spots) and they have a definite purplish color which usually does not show up well with photograph, outside or otherwise...it is not nearly as strong as it is on pacuvius in the eastern Colorado Front Range. Pacuvius is recorded from Grand County though it is a rather rare encounter anywhere in western Colorado but does fly in the habitat you described. It might be the duskywing you see flying rapidly in a straight line in the habitat and not stopping for anything...that is my experience although I did find one at mud one time in Glenwood Canyon. It also will be found in July not early June on the western slope. Mike
