Observation notes: I have never seen this type of moth before. The day was sunny and about 22C. The moth was between 1-1.5" long and emerged from under leaf litter as I was digging in the garden. It was under a Thuja tree and a thistle which I was digging out. It walked, didn't fly, and moved pretty quickly. The way it moved made me think of a large beetle. Once I left it alone for a while it hid under the leaf litter again. I noticed two splotches and two tiny black spots on its wing.
