Giant Swallowtail
Papilio cresphontes

Observation date: September 23, 2024
Submitted by: COA1955
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I count three big ones and another seven not far behind. They were out to get the sun this morning after a chilly 38 last night. Looks like good weather for at least another week. Fingers crossed they pupate in time to beat any freezing weather.

Coordinator notes: That is very cool Char...awsome from the head! Hope they all made it through but I am fairly sure they will not emerge until next spring if they make it through diapause and the winter. Did you confine them so you can keep them over the winter in a somewhat sheltered place yet where it does get fairly cold? Would sure like to have one as a Colorado-grown specimen, although I know you may not believe in preserving any that way. If you can put together a picture series, consider submitting to BAMONA for their gallery...would be neat with a photo of an emerged adult. Hope the winter treats you well out yonder. Take care, Mike
