Observation notes: This amazing butterfly was by far the highlight of this trip to Wheeler Peak, of the whole year for that matter! I climbed up to the first large scree field I saw above the trail in search of this species, and soon saw a few black butterflies flying around that could only be Magdalena Alpines. I was finally able to approach one close enough for some great shots. These butterflies are camouflaged so well that I could be standing right next to one perched on a rock and not notice it until I flush it. I saw about 5-6 of these on both days that I was hiking Wheeler Peak, always in or near scree fields, and including two chasing each other through the air and one at nectar. As far as I can tell these are the only photos online of this butterfly in New Mexico. I'm very grateful to have seen such an amazing creature in such a beautiful habitat.
