Mournful Duskywing
Erynnis tristis

Observation date: April 18, 2025
Submitted by: Gordon Berman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Several duskywings (the only butterflies seen) were nectaring on Cliff fendlerbushes (Fendlera rupicola) in full flower 3/4 mile up Pine Tree Trail going clockwise. The morning temperature was 60, the sky sunny, the breeze gentle - until Dustopia struck about 11:00 am.

Coordinator notes: Gordon, I can see from the different photo angles that you were trying to capture the underside of the wings, where the definitive marks are for Mournful. Without out those marks it's really a hard call, with Scudder's and Juvenal's also possible. On the plus side, we can definitely rule out funereal because the base of the FW is mottled while that of funeral is almost solid black. Mournful the most likely for the others, so I'll go with that.
