Great Purple Hairstreak
Atlides halesus

Observation date: November 15, 2011

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This was my first time ever seeing this species of butterfly. I was amazed at how close I could get to it without it flying away, unlike the skittish Monarchs. I observed the hind wings rubbing together slowly, back and forth, the entire time the butterfly was on the flower. It walked all over the pentas, never opening it's wings unless in flight. There were two of them in my garden, though the second one was missing the extended part of it's hind wings. They returned again the next day.
