Observation notes: It was very windy, but the caterpillar still managed to stay stable... it would raise half its body up and down and then keep going on its way. No nearby plants, it was on a wooden post walking by a mountainy range right over the beach. Southern California.

Coordinator notes: Orgyia probably vetusta, but the "Orgyia vetusta complex, has in California at least three species for which the taxonomy remains somewhat uncertain" (from MPG).
