Polyphemus moth
Antheraea polyphemus

Observation date: August 06, 2013
Submitted by: queitschea
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was a warm but overcast morning in Delaware. The moth was sitting motionless with his top wing section laid over the rear. We thought it might be dead so I picked up a small stick and nudged it's rear. It seemed to labor and struggle to move but it's full wing span was revealed. That's when I snapped this picture. I'd never seen a moth this large before but I knew that it was not a butterfly by the color and the body type. I tried to help it regain flight by prodding it and it did get airborne enough to leave the porch and land in our shrubbery nearby.
