Observation notes: Dozens of these geometers were blown off the leaves of the dominant deciduous tree species in the forest, each caterpillar dangling by its own thread. Many such trees had clusters of leaves each with 1-2 of these caterpillars eating them. Caterpillar lengths 10-20 mm. Host tree leaves shown at www.inaturalist.org/observations/662952 .
Added 5/9/2014: BugGuide suggested looking for a reduced pair of prolegs on abdominal segment A5, as this may suggest a Fall Cankerworm. Indeed the caterpillar has them. I have replaced the first photo with a different one that shows the reduced A5 prolegs.
