Observation notes: Clear, warm (high 60's low 70's) day. Caterpillar was moving across a path next to (and away from) Little Whitetop Creek. The creek is in Little Whitetop (Laurel Creek) is located Washington County, VA in the southwestern mountains. I saw a Pipevine Swallowtail and Yellow Easter Tiger Swallotails there the same day but know this is not the larvae of those butterflies. The stream was less that 25 yards from the path. The foliage around consisted of Beech, Cherry, and Maple trees (among others), Pipevine (Dutchman's Pipe vine), Rhododendron, Bulbous Buttercups, Bearded Tongue, Wild Hydrangea, Common Cinquefoil, Hearst-a-bustin-with-Love in bud and bloom stages, Daisy Fleabane, blackberry vines, Poison Ivy, and Golden Ragwort. There were also some heart-shaped, veiny ground-cover 'vines' that I have yet to identify.
