Carmenta bassiformis (Walker, 1856)

Subfamily: Sesiinae
Identification: Wings transparent, but with a broad, dark border on forewing. Thorax purplish black; abdomen also purplish black with yellow bands in both sexes. Note width of bands, especially on abdominal segments 3 and 5: those bands narrower in female; all bands nearly same width in male. Antennae all black in male; black with a white section in female.
Wing Span: 1.8-2.6 cm.
Life History:
Flight: Late May-September.
Caterpillar Hosts: Roots of ironweed and joe-pye-weed.

Range: Massachusetts to Florida, west to Wisconsin, Kansas, and Texas.
