(Phyllonorycter Rosaceae-feeding species)
Phyllonorycter sp. Fabricius, 1781

Family: Gracillariidae
Subfamily: Lithocolletinae
Identification: Three very similar-looking Phyllonorycter species that occur east of the Rockies develop as larvae in underside tentiform mines in the leaves of trees in the rose family (Rosaceae). They are P. crataegella (Apple Blotch Leafminer, on hawthorn and apple), P. propinquinella (Cherry Blotch Miner Moth, apparently restricted to wild cherry), and the introduced P. blancardella (Spotted Tentiform Leafminer, on apple.) Differentiating the adults requires dissection and examination of genitalia.
